I was telling another member so I thought that I would share it with you guys.
I just got this installed yesterday. It's called U-verse from AT&T. 5 letters...u n r e a l ! The internet is stupid fast. The clarity is HD quality without the HD. *exaggerating a tad, but it's close* I can put up to ten laptops on my router, and with my fam...That's a good thing. I have my router on the 4th floor and still get an "excellent" signal in the basement.
You get everything you have now and more without interruption. It took them like 5-6 hours to install, so you'll have to make a day of it. But it's worth it. They even do dial tone. But no more cable, no more dish, and no more DSL. Welcome to the 21st Century!
Hell you guys may already have it. What do I know. If so...You know what I'm feeling right now!
BTW, I'm paying $89.00 + tax (which goes up to 7% April 1st up here...No foolin') for everything I just told you.

I am totally ignorant to this stuff but it sounds great. Is that $89 a month and does that include a cable tv package as well? And do you know if this is available in our area because I've never heard of this for around here.?

Our local EPB (Electric Power Board) has just started running the fiber optic cables here. It should be 5 years or less to cover the whole county. I can't wait. The Comcast Cable whores here are trying to sue the EPB to stop this from happening. Damn, I so want to drop Comcast; like a hot wolf turd in the snow!

Don't ever say cable and fiber in the same sentence again! ;D It includes several TV packages, extremely high speed internet, and phone. www.att.com/gen/general?pid=9722

I went to dish JUST to get away from Cable even though I lost. But I didn't care. Now it's to hell with ALL of it. THANK YOU AT&T! I was like a select few houses that could pick it up, so we're like guinea pigs if you will. It's still very new. But WOW! It's sharp.

Describe to us the difference between what you had and what you have now? We use to not even be hooked into cable to get on the net and it would take 2minutes or more to jump from page to page. When we hooked up to comcast we thought (and still think) that were living in cotton. How much better?

Anyone have questions about fiber, I can answer them. I deal daily in fiber. HD, did the fiber run come from the pole to the home. Have they ran the fiber from pole to pole yet? Pole to pole and grid system is what EPB is doing and I can NOT wait. I was wanting someone to be a guinea pig and check with the EPB about being one, wonder if he did? ?? Which fiber mode did they install for you HD? SM or MM? 50? 62.5? 6 strand, 12 strand? Is it the Laser Optimized? LO is the latest and greatest, it would be an aqua colored fiber jacket if it is LO. Which type of router did they install? or did they attach a gigbob?

Well, Fredo, it doesn't make you poop any more than you should generally do if your system was staying true to form. For instance, if you ate a well balanced meal every day , 3 times a day, you would poop like your system is suppose to. BUT, since not most of us do this, they take fiber via pill, powder, etc. NOW, we think we are pooping more, but really, we are pooping just as if we had the true system going on

Which type of router did they install? or did they attach a gigbob? It's coming from a hub down the street. Way down the street, although the tech said that I needed to be in a range of 5300 ft to receive the signal which of course steers me towards it being a wireless connection to get it here. When it's able to come directly to my house, I'll have my house rewired then I should get speeds of like 10mbps.

I like to give all necessary info which will apply to the asked question Range of 5300'...must be a single mode fiber in their hub. Just a guess though. I would imagine the plan would be a direct buried cable, much easier to do field termination. Though with the quick cams we have today it is a breeze! Gel filled fiber is a bitch for field termination. heh, 10mbps isn't shit when it comes to fiber, think more like 10gigs! Of course the electronics have a long way to catch up to the fiber abilities, but they are up and coming. Only one problem i see in the future with fiber. With helium being on the verge of depletion, it is used to create fiber, the costs have been dropping for years, cheaper than copper, but when helium becomes a problem I am sure hoping they are already working on a solution for this or else fiber is going thru the roof. Their is a new system now that will convert all the copper to fiber for RF UHF, etc. Pricey, but NICE. Think of everything and anything you could do with a video, movie, live annoucements, sound, communication thru an entire building or house with one system on fiber. I would think SM will be ran to residents. SM can go longer distances without a "relay" so to speak. The 50 micron also gives the best attenuation. Of course they could always run hybrids and then "scatter" to a neighborhood. I just hope all these companies don't try to do it cheaply and just pay the extra few bucks to do it right the first time. Should set most people up to where it would be more than enough for a hundred or so years.

I may be way off base here since I don't know any of this technology but is there a way in the future that instead of cables and fibers could computer information be beamed up to a satellite and down into your homes without having to run all these lines? Yeah you can tell I don't know jack.

Heck, I run checks on my internet speed with cable and I am running close to 20megs per second downloads. I expect that the EPB will make that a distant memeory if they are true to thier word.

Yeah you can tell I don't know jack. They can beam the info down. The problem is in the upload. There is no way to beam the info back. Currently, satellite internet requires a phone line. There are air cards available through the wireless carriers such as AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint. It is true wireless. The service is pricey tho and not as fast as a fiber optic connection.
