My old A/C went out about 3 years ago during one of those hot July weeks and I found a novel solution. The compressor would overheat and limit out after about ten minutes, so I chopped a hole in the vent and inserted a water hose. A steady stream of water kept the thing cool enough to operate for the two or three days it took to get the new one installed. The a team would have been proud. ;D Great idea! I might try that if it goes out tonight because the thermal overload on my compressor is kicking off because of the excess heat it's producing. BTW I'm going from a 10 SEER to a 13 SEER to existing duct work which seems to be AOK. Do you know about how much a month we might save? Our bills a fairly low anyways though.

It's hard to estimate what your savings will be, but one thing is for certain, it's going to be a lot quieter around your house. the 13 SEER units are about 30% as loud as the 10.
In the new place, we went with the 14 SEER dual speed systems and it's working like a charm for not that much more money.

It's right next to our bedroom and that last one would make so much noise I had to have Reliable come out and install a boot (which didn't help much) around the compressor to help keep it quiet. This Bryant doesn't have all the bells and whistles but I got it installed and everything for $3200. I hope I can get 18 years out of this one but I have my serious doubts about quality these days.

I tell people to plan on replacing their units in no more than 15 years. the old one might still be running, but the efficiency will have suffered to the point that it will be time to upgrade.
