I have a Sansa Fuze that I have had no trouble with and I really like it. But my worldly children have put the Apple ITouch bug in my head. It does lots more stuff than just play music, i.e. surf the net, video chat with someone that has an IPhone, takes pictures, and more.
What MP3 type players do you Cat Houser's use and why?

My kids have Ipods. I guess it would depend on your desire. I don't even have a MP player, except my CD player in my car will play MPs so I convert all my CDs to MP so I can put 10 albums on one CD. I don't own anything portable for "media" , including not having a data plan on my phone. But, I digress. I do alot of that shit for a living, so I guess I get enough of it in my day

Do your kids have Ipods because there is some special feature about them or just because it is the popular brand to have? My kids got an Ipod Touch free with the purchase of their Apple Mac Pro computers they bought when they went to college. I suspect they would have bought the Ipod anyway because everybody else has one.

Well, when they got theres it was the newest thing (years ago) They just wanted some type of portable music device that would hold alot of music. Plus you would download to the ipod. They don't have ipod touches.

I don't have one either, Manly. I've ripped all my favorite tunes off my CDs and on to my laptop and I have a 6 CD changer in Truckie so it is still my medium. I buy 'em 2nd hand cheap on Amazon. Plus there are two ass-kicking R&R stations in my midst. Then there's Towson State's NPR station which is progressive album-oriented rock and reminds me of KLPI at LA Tech. Finally, there is another offbeat station in Annapolis born from a progressive rock station that was alive when I first moved here. And I also listen to WMVY from Martha's Vineyard MA online.

I have a few Sansa mp3 players too, among others that I've acquired over the years. I like the Sansa units the best (based on features and usability).
I use mine for music and audio books. My music collection is about 1TB, with the audio books at about half that.
The IPod Touch has some nice features, if you have any use for them. For one, I'm not about to watch a movie on a 3.5" screen.
IMO, anything Apple is overpriced but it does come with a 'cool' cache. I'm simply not prepared to pay for that however.
If you like what you see with the Touch, check out what else is being offered in that space before you pass your cash across the counter.

I agree that everything with the APPLE on it is WAY over priced. My daughter has a "technology" scholarship at college that she used to buy her computer, printer, etc. She has some funds left over and must use it up before the end of the semester. I suggested she get a external backup for future use, but she seems to think she doesn't need one. She wants to use it to buy her dad the Ipod Touch. Gotta love the child that thinks of her bear old dad!

oohh .. yes, get the Touch! It is on my radar for sure. I still don't fool with the Mp3 format all that much. We have generic models so we can put our own stuff on them. I haven't used mine since I stopped doing shows. I'm only lately wanting to buy new releases so I may be using the Mp3 players again. My car system is antiquated so I use radio or -- don't laugh -- cassette tapes. I find them for a quarter and use them for a while. I can also still make my own mix tapes for car trips. In the house we have a system vintage components plus a desktop in a different room with a decent sound system. Sometimes I'll buy a box of LP's and listen to them before I sell them or give them away. I just don't like them laying around the house.

Seeing that it's a gift changes the situation a little bit. You could just graciously accept the Touch but if you think you have some input, I'd still suggest taking a look at what else similar is available.
Given Apple's pricing, who knows, you might be able to end up with a new music device and your daughter with that external drive.
If your daughter has a Touch or iPhone 4, there is a sharing feature with the Touch that's only available to other Touch and iPhone users however. And this is one of those that makes Apple ' cool'.
FaceTime - video calling and instant messaging that uses the front and back facing cameras that are built into the device.
This is definitely not a run of the mill mp3 player. Have fun with it.

I use my smart phone. I have an iPod Nano, but why bother carrying around the extra gear when my phone does everything better than the iPod does. My phone will play through my car stereo via Bluetooth and automatically mutes when there's an incoming call. I have a 16GB SD card in the phone and I allocate 8GB for music. With standard MP3's that's about 7000 songs or so, so that's plenty.

I was staying out of this one because I really had nothing to contribute, but Mrs fredo told em last night that she demands a new set of wireless headphones for running. Anyone have a recommendation on such? While I'm at it, I guessing that there's a new mp3 in her future as well.
Right now I'm thinking of the ipod nano. It has to be uber simple or she will never be able to operate it.

Yep, ipod nano is as simple as it can get. Plus, it is really well made. Be sure to get her an arm band to put it in

Not to mention the fact that should there be an emergency with Little Fredo, you can't hear the phone ring wearing headphones. With the smartphone, you can. Most of the new ones are very simple and straight forward as well. If you get one, you have the added convenience of using bluetooth headphones... no wires! As far as headphone models, these sound great. Don't own a pair, but have listed to them and tested them. www.diguniverse.com/HEADPHONES/HEADPHONES/YDRBT160AS.html

I got here the simplest phone I could find and she still goes on about how difficult it is to operate. Mrs Fredo is brilliant in many ways, but she's easily confounded by simple electronics.

Agree with Dire. We have droids and never would have believed it but I love them. I am also technically challenged and was initally scared of it. Love the muting when you have an incoming call plus ours came with earplugs/buds and a case that can be attached to you for carrying. Also couldn't believe how good music sounds on it.
