www.timesfreepress.com/news/2011/may/11/browns-ferry-red-flag-will-intensify-scrutiny/Federal nuclear regulators Tuesday red-flagged last fall's failure of a low- pressure coolant valve at the Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant and have ordered increased inspections and oversight at TVA's oldest nuclear facility. The 'red, or high safety significance,' finding — the most severe ranking the Nuclear Regulatory Commission gives to problems uncovered in its inspections — is only the fifth issued nationwide in the past decade, according to NRC spokesman Roger Hannah.

Nuclear power is on the way out. recent events have demonstrated to the satisfaction of nearly everyone that it just can't be done safely.
In case you guys missed it, the Japanese reactors are still not entirely contained they just fell out of the news cycle.

Scary stuff, since we have them so close. I don't know a lot about them, but.......... We got trace radiation from JAPAN. Proximity doesn't mean much when it comes to an inherently dangerous power source.

True. But having one in your back yard, something goes wrong, we are toast. It's only the difference between being quickly toasted and slowly poisoned.

I was about to say I would rather be quickly toasted. But it depends on how long and how painful the slowly poisoned is.

I was about to say I would rather be quickly toasted. But it depends on how long and how painful the slowly poisoned is. There are still people dying from various cancers caused by Chernobyl. I'll take quickly toasted.

Meh, me too, if it is painful. But if I get more years and no pain.......... The key thing is the no pain and other assorted stuff associated.

Radiation sickness and cancer aren't illnesses that are known to be easy to live with.
