Of course she said they were already here and one reason was her 3 main Sand Mountain growers got wiped out buy that April storm. But she also said this drought we are having all over will have a huge impact on prices and availability.

I just took a walk around my neighborhood and saw a lot more gardens than I have in the past. Maybe that will help with our produce bill. People always grow more than they can use.

I was in Mentone, Al a couple of days ago and a lady was selling her homegrown and canned goods from a tent in front of her house. They looked really good but I just couldn't get the idea of botulism out of my head. One of my grandmothers would can about anything that grows. Green beans, beets, peppers, tomatoes and peaches were her main thing. Also those little green tomatoes.

We're going to freeze some stuff this year but if our garden gets bigger, we may consider canning some stuff next year. First, I gotta build the fairly labor intensive garden structure that we have planned.

We're also learning to can anything we can.

My next door neighbor has converted practically his entire front yard to raised bed gardens. It's fun to watch him try to keep the rabbits and deer out.

Okay maybe the canned idea is a bad idea maybe we'll roll with a frozen one. Lol! Glad your neighbor didn't get treated like the Michigan lady who had a neat nice one in her front yard in a residential area and was going to get 93 days in jail or else. Enough people told the zoning nazis to fark off so the case was eventually dismissed.

I used to keep a hillside garden that was about 1/2 acre down the side of Missionary Ridge. I also had a small greenhouse that was perfect for late season greens and such. Not anymore.. I'm too lazy. I did that for about 10 years. I was self taught but did pretty well with it. I do stop at roadside stands when I see them though. I live downtown so we have the Chatt Market on Sunday and the Farmer's Market on Wednesday. I've got some green beans and herbs this year but that is all. I got tired of all the watering and hassle of the garden.

Fredo, my greenhouse was similar to this one but had stone walls instead of the wood like this one. The floor was also concrete with a drain. It was built by a man who was handy around the house ca 1960s. With your carpentry skills you could keep your family in fresh veggies most of the year. Mine wasn't heated but stayed warm enough as long as the temperature didn't go too far below freezing, The stone walls were there to hold the heat in cold weather. I kept it going all year long when possible. I've considered adding a large one to this property and grow for resale.

We weren't thinking of a greenhouse... although I have to consider that now. We were planning on building some terraced gardens along the South side of the house. The problem is that all of the material has to be taken down the hill by hand. That's going to take some effort. I think I'll get a decent start on it this summer but I doubt I'll have it all in by Spring unless I hire some help.
