Romney's first VP pick passed.

The New York post reports that Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey was Romney's first pick for a Vice Presidential running mate, but passed on the gig because he didn't think Romney would win.
Gov. Chris Christie wasn't willing to give up the New Jersey statehouse to be Mitt Romney's running mate because he doubted they'd win, The Post has learned.
Romney's top aides had demanded Christie step down as the state's chief executive because if he didn't, strict pay-to-play laws would have restricted the nation's largest banks from donating to the campaign — since those banks do business with New Jersey.
But Christie adamantly refused to sacrifice his post, believing that being Romney's running mate wasn't worth the gamble.
'[Christie] felt, at one point, that [President] Obama could lose this. And, look, there still is that chance. But he knows, right now, you have to say it's unlikely,' one source said.
Ouch.
Maybe I'm just a cynic, but I think it'll be fairly close (though I still think Obama will win). I'm not Obama's biggest fan, but he's certainly, as the cliche goes, the lesser of two evils. However, I'm not put at ease when Obama says he's that if Republicans are willing that he's prepared to make a whole range of compromises. I realize that good leaders must be willing to compromise, but I'd sure like to see on what points he's willing to do it. Some things, like marriage equality, should reside behind a rigid and unmoving line. Human rights should not be negotiable.
Seriously, why can't we get Michael D. Higgins?
