Senate Republicans shaft the vets Rational Review News Digest|Steve Trinward "The young men and women who serve in our military return from fighting in the longest wars in American history to the worst jobs market in generations. ... So yesterday, in one final vile act before adjournment for the elections, Senate Republicans used a point of order to block passage of the Veteran’s Jobs Act that would have provided a modest $1 billion to hire veterans to tend federal lands or gain priority in hiring at police and fire departments. ... Fifty-eight senators supported the bill, but Republicans put together the 40 votes needed to block its passage." [editor's note: Once again, explain how this "supermajority" thing kills a bill, not just allowing a filibuster? - SAT] [additional editor's note: Steve, a filibuster is delaying a vote with procedural moves even though the 60 votes may be there for cloture; not having the votes for cloture kills the bill because it isn't just a delay, the thing ain't going to a vote, period - TLK] (09/20/12) rationalreview.news-digests.com/archives/99724?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=senate-republicans-shaft-the-vets

I haven't read the bill but I wouldn't be even slightly surprised to find out that the dims threw in an amendment demanding that abortion on demand be paid for by a special levy on churches. They both do crap like that just to make the other side look bad.

i can see both sides of this one. however, the bad outweighs the good. first of all, the only reason this bill was advanced was to appeal to a certain voting block. secondly, it violates the budget control act. then there is the fact that this is a spending bill that would not even go through the House. the bill is not paid for. there are six other programs designed to help veterans find jobs and no one even knows if they are working.
as usual, it seems that the democrats just want to throw more and more money at the problem instead of fixing the programs that are already in place. the problem is at the macro level and they want to focus on the micro level. and of course, when these bills get shot down, they get their flashy headlines (see above) and talking points to take to the voters (which is really all they wanted in the first place).
