Typical politics is akin to sausage making but not this time.
Trump's running a Kobayashi Maru campaign. He's changing the rules.
The establishment doesn't like that, a lot, judging by the squealing and the head's exploding right and left.
So, typically, an outsider nominee would pick a VP acceptable to the establishment, e.g. Reagan's pick of Bush.
Since it's different this time, with none of the establishment types to be trusted, I would expect Trump's choice to be outside any conventional wisdom.
I'm content to just wait and see who it will be without too much energy spent on speculation, but, what if he picked Rand Paul?
Not sure about their personal chemistry or Rand's integrity but I think he's an outside the box bold thinker in his own way.
Could make for an interesting ticket.

Amid all of the other names that are being floated about, the latest is retired Lt. Gen. Michael T. Flynn. link

He needs the crossover voters and bernouts so I think a general would be a poor choice. Newt would be a waste in the VP spot, plus he's just too ingrained into the party machine. It's not being floated and it's pretty unlikely, but I think Rand Paul would be a good choice.
He's got a couple of terms in the senate behind him. He's accustomed to tweaking the nose of the establishment and he could bring the libertarian and bernout votes in sufficient numbers to close the deal. As a bonus, they won't dare kill him with Rand next in line.

I was hoping that Rand would be the pick too, after all of the misdirection with the other names supposedly in contention. Establishment heads would be exploding en mass.
His announcement of Pence today was actually disappointing. Doesn't seem like a good fit but I don't know him very well.
At this point I'm going on, 'Trust Trump'.
He knows how to make good deals, but he's always playing chess in 3 dimensions. You pick the battles to win the war. Perhaps fighting both the GOP and the Democrats at the same time was not a good choice.
The race is not over, it's only begun. Let the games continue.

I originally thought that Pence was a compromise to settle some of the noise in the party. Having now researched him a bit and heard him speak, he makes a lot more sense. He fill a lot of the mechanical gaps in Trump's skill set. He's said from the beginning that he wants a politician to help with the sausage making portion of the job. This now leaves Newt free for sec of state or UN ambassador where his skill set can be fully employed.
