Most of you know that I'm in the construction business, so I thought I might be able to answer some questions for the do-it-yourself types as well as the green peas. My Qualifications: I've been a residential general contractor for the last 12 years and am licensed in Tennessee as such. I mostly do high end renovation work and will occasionally do a custom house. My particular specialty is architecturally sensitive restoration and custom homes designed to blend in with older neighborhoods. If you've ever driven down the street and noticed an addition on a house; it wasn't one of mine. Mine don't look like additions unless the client absolutely demands a certain design over my objections to it. Examples:We turned this:Into this: This:Into this:Renovated this big fella:Well, you get the picture. Fire away and I'll do my best to give you accurate answers.

When I had my house inspected, someone said that I need to get my "flashings" I think, replaced. Are these, those narrow strips that run along the peak?

Given the general level of knowledge among home inspectors, I suspect that he meant you pipe flashings. These are the rubber, metal or plastic boots that seal the vent pipes where they come through your roof. If you can get on the roof, look for cracks and splits where the rubber meets the pipe. Also check below the vent pipe for loose nails. If the cracks aren't too bad, you can just seal them with a bit of silicone.
If it's not that, check any place that a roof meets a wall or a fireplace. The flashing will be the metal that is used to make the transition between the materials.
Sorry for the slow reply, I just saw this post today.
