The Redhawk is, without a doubt, one of the finest revolvers on the market. It has unparalleled style and power and for a revolver is also EXTREMELY accurate.
I would suggest against getting a black powder pistol for home defense however as black powder, even modern black powder, is still VERY moister sensitive and as such the rounds have a recommended shelf life of around 6 months to a year depending on the climate you live in.
Black powder weapons also have to be cleaned after every use and require weakly maintenance to ensure they will be ready when needed, and generally the maintenance supplies are different for them than they are for modern weapons.
Just some considerations for you if you still wanna do the black powder route…

If you want a Ruger revolver, I think the sp-101 is one of the best small frame .38s on the market. I love that little thing.

Doc, the only unique perspective is that I have on revolvers is that of some with small/weak hands.
1. Revolvers have a stronger trigger oull than semi's. Is your wife going to have her own weapon, or will she be sharing your, and if so, will she be comfortable with it? Is she a good enough shot for only six rounds?
3. Do you really want to clean it every week? It gets humid up there.
Other than that, my knowledge is very limited on black powder.
My knowledge on revolver is that I'm not strong enough to pull the trigger. I'm better off keeping it unloadedand pistol whipping someone with it.
