Not sure if this needs to be here or in Electronics but here goes...
I'm wanting to put in a gas log fireplace if I ever get the money for my remodeling. The problem is the best place for the fireplace is also the best place for my Sony LCD. I see a lot of LCD's or Plasma's being placed above fireplaces on HGTV. Is this a good idea? I want to think if done right the heat wouldn't be an issue. I have such a good plan in mind if it can be done without causing harm to my TV. I love my Sony!

Is it a recessed area, or will the TV be flat to the wall? If it is flat to the wall directly above the fireplace, the mantle will deflect alot of the direct heat away from the TV. Also, it would be a good idea to buy a deflector for the top of the fireplace to keep the heat from creeping up. It is just a small vent type shield that doesn't make it look asethically bad, and snaps directly into the open vent holes at the top. You shouldn't have any problems. Remember though, gas fireplaces are sold as ambiance and not heat sources

What she said. We've done this quite a few times without incident. Most frequently we do it with ventless models, but the vented ones shouldn't pose any extra danger from heat.

I find those gas fireplaces useless. Other than like 502 said, the ambiance. I think we have lit ours a total of 5 times, we have teh ventless, but you still have to crack a window, and can still smell the gas. I would put a flat tv over it tho, it has not seemed like it has gotten that hot.

Just what I thought. BF says, Oh no. Heat and LCD's don't mix. We wont go there... My Dad has a vent-less gas log in his old wood burning fireplace and keeps his den (which is very large) quite toasty. Where I want to put mine is in the corner with a mantle and recessed cabinet above to hold the TV. Probably with doors to close the TV off when not in use which is rare.
My place of choice is in the end corner of the LR which would throw the heat down the hall. I don't know but it seems that it would be real easy to put in a vented one. I have had propane heat until recently and would really feel safer if it were vented.
