Anyone got any experiences with gas logs / fireplaces? Got one? Vented / non-vented / unvented? Like it or not? Where did you purchase it? Who installed it? Costs? I've got gas ( ), just not plumbed to the fireplace.

I know just the man who can give you a great deal and hook it all up (he is certified)
I love mine, non-vented.......put a vented one at my moms place.......well, the costs for me aren't really relevant so i can't go there.
do you want to use it as heat? They can warm up a spot, just takes time if you don't have a blower attached. If you want a blower, you need to mention that.
I'll PM you the number

We have a non-vented one downstairs - we do not like it. It is more for ambiance than anything, in my opinion. As it is not vented, we have to crack a window, which kind of defeats the purpose of trying to heat. I smell the gas.
Upstairs, we put in a wood stove. Love it. It is not gas (hence it being a wood stove, lol). We had one in CA, and since we disliked the gas fireplace so much, we decided to put a wood stove in here. We have had it for 3 years now in our bonus room. The room has 20' high ceilings and the room is over the garage, so it was always cold in the winter. Now, it will get so hot in there if you let it. We also like the wood stove aspect of it as opposed to an open fireplace, don't get the smells and all of that.
Where we lived in CA, practically everybody had a wood stove, so it is normal for us. One other thing you could look at is a pellet stove - just like the wood stove, but you don't have to mess with the wood, just load the pellets up. That is, if you are looking for something as a heat source. If you want ambiance, that is all we have found our fireplace useful for.

Even the unvented ones don't give a gas smell. You have a potentially dangerous problem with that. Seriously. I don't know all the technical ins and outs, but there are reasons to have vented and reasons to have unvented. if you want alot of heat, you want a vented set. It produces more heat. Or you can just add a blower to either one to produce more heat. Depends on the size of the room. Emanon, really, get that checked or turn off the gas that goes to that . I would not trust that at all.

thnx for the advice, but we have had it checked twice. Both times, they said it was in perfect working order. I thought the same thing you said, both companies came and and said it was working perfectly.
I just don't like them, the gas fireplaces that is. It is not an overpowering smell, pretty subtle, kind of like a gas grill. When we go into a place like Southern Hearth (I think that is the name of it), I can make out that smell.
If I were to put a gas fireplace in, I would not really, but if I had to, I would do a vented, like you said. I would want it for the heat benefit. Our ventless is mainly ambiance - expensive ambiance at that. The 2 diff companies that came out did tell us about the blower, and said we would get a little more heat out of ours. We just went with the wood stove upstairs. Our gas one, I don't think we have turned it on in over 3 years - so if we ever did, I would call somebody out to check it again.

Maybe I am mistaken, most of the ones I have ever dealt with, including my own, are propane, and I have never had a smell.
I do like wood stoves, they are great for heating.

Mine is propane, and I do not smell it when it is off. The 2 guys we had come check told us the same thing about the smell, that it is common. BUT, they did say that some people smell it more than others. I am somebody that really seems to smell things - like I am hypersensitive in smelling some things?
I smell the gas fireplace more than my husband does. So, that may be why you do not notice it as much??
