Here's a good example of a gun control measure that everyone could agree on if only it had one small tweak. The National Rifle Association today sued Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and Pittsburgh City Council in an effort to overturn a law that penalizes gun owners who fail to report lost or stolen firearms within 24 hours.linkJust amend it to say that a gun owner must report it within 24 hours of the discovery and you've got a pretty good law. I've got guns I haven't seen in at least a year. Should I be penalized if one of them has gone missing without my knowledge? Unfortunately, this law is more likely an attempt to put another burden on lawful gun owners instead of actually attempting to slow down criminal's access to firearms.

i've got mixed emotions about this. on one hand, it's a good idea for LE to know that your firearm is now in the possession of a criminal. on the other hand, why should i be required by law to notify anyone that my personal property has been stolen? what if that gun wasn't registered?
i've had a gun stolen before. i did notify the police for two reasons. first, i hoped that the gun would be recovered and returned to me. second, if my gun was used to commit a crime, i wanted to make sure i wasn't sought in connection to that crime.
i think it's smart to notify LE. however, i don't necessarily think not doing so should be a punishable offense.

Even in the case of a weapon bought through a private sale, I don't think I would want someone who s, by definition, a criminal to have a firearm that has my prints either on the weapon or the ammunition. Given that there's no firearm registration in TN, you really have no down side other than the gun would be traceable to you if it were recovered... which almost never happens except at a crime scene. I wouldn't advocate throwing someone in jail for this offense, but the safety aspect warrants some compulsion to notify LE of the problem. If it were one gun, that's not such a big thing, but what if they got into sarge's house and cleaned him out? That's a lot of extra firepower to suddenly have available to exactly the wrong people.
