Sad for the girls since one died but this perp actually tried to flee the scene until Knepp jumped in with a gun trained on the idiot. "No sooner had they crossed the street than I heard tires lock up and, 'Boom! Boom!,'æ" said Alan Knepp, who was standing just up the street when the girls were hit.
Knepp said the younger girl passed quickly beneath the vehicle, but her older sister rode the hood for several seconds before falling beneath the front end and then under both driver's side tires.
The girls behind him, the driver then hit the gas, witnesses said, but stopped when Knepp, who was legally carrying a gun, jumped in front of the vehicle and trained his weapon on it.
Approached by Knepp, the driver reportedly said the girls had jumped out in front of him. He then handed his keys to Knepp and stood silently next to his vehicle until police arrived.southbendtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090508/NEWS01/905080347

The pro-gun crowd might try to portray this as an instance of someone carrying a gun doing something good, but that fact remains in question.
The guy with the gun is trying to act like a hero, but there is no indication that the driver would have left the scene. In fact, he wasn't even charged. The driver claimed that the girls jumped out in front of his car and that appears to be the case.
The sad part of this story is that one of the little girls has died and the other remains in critical condition. The questions that need to be asked are how a 4 year-old and a 6 year-old are allowed to run across the street without adult supervision.
It's easy to blame the driver, but I think the parent(s) need to share some of the blame.

Even the village idiot would agree that hitting the gas does not indicate the same intent as hitting the brakes.
It is also reasonable to consider that without Knepp stepping into the street with his firearm drawn, the driver would be long gone whatever the circumstances surrounding the girls being run over.
Fortunately for the driver, Knepp probably saved him from a hit and run charge.
For the family, it's a very sad accident outcome.

I doubt the guy was trying to get away. From the various accounts I read, it would appear that he was already stopped when Clint Eastwood Jr. drew down on him. I'm guessing the driver was pretty shaken up even before the guy accosted him.
When something like that happens it takes a few seconds to get your bearings and think clearly. At least it did for me when my car was plowed from behind at a red light one night by a hit-and-run driver. By the time I got my cap back on and figured out I wasn't hurt and got out of my car, the driver of the other car had jumped out and run away into the night on foot. I never did even see the fool.
Not surprisingly, the CPD couldn't solve this crime, even with the fucker's car still in the middle of Hixson Pike, and no charges were ever filed. They said they couldn't prove who was driving since there were two boys at the address where the car was registered. I told them that it was probably the one with the glass sticking out of his face.
