Mayor of Newark is willing to pay $1000 to turn in your neighbor or friend for an illegal gun. WTH!

I don't see the problem here. A cash reward for turning in someone who is breaking the law. What's the difference between this program and the "Crime Stoppers" program we have here?
Cash for turning in bad guys. I like it.

Even though this program emphasizes the seizure of "illegal" guns, I can see how it can be easily lead to people reporting those who are legally carrying firearms.
Plus, this whole idea just reeks of the Orwellian-type situation that was seen in the USSR and in the Stasi-dominated East Germany, where people reported their neighbors for favors from (or relief from) the government, even if those neighbors had done nothing wrong.
Scary. Good thing I have good neighbors! You tube actual comment

Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?" Oddball to Moriarity in the movie "Kelly's Hero's"

I'm droppin dime on all you gun-totin bastards and bastardettes. Time for me to get paid! If you know of anything illegal in my home or in my car or on my person, you are welcome to snitch me out for the reward anytime you feel frisky. If you falsely accuse me of having anything illegal in my home or in my car or on my person, I reserve the right to kick your ass.

Kelly's Hero's. I was surprised when reminded that it was released in 1970. I didn't think I could remember back that far. ;D
With an all star cast, Telly Savalas and his brother George, Clint Eastwood, Donald Sutherland, Don Rickles, Carroll O'Connor, Len Lesser (Seinfeld's Uncle Leo) and Gavin MacLeod as Moriarity, I liked the movie then and even have the DVD now.

This kind of program does give one visions of the Stazi and neighbors turning one another in to enhance their own positions. Pretty much everyone has something illegal in his home. It might be anything from an M-203 to an illegally copied photograph.
The real rub comes when an accusation by a neighbor can become probable cause for a search. Once they're in the door, you're getting busted for something.
So long as a search cannot be performed based solely upon the word of a tattletale, we're still in safe country.
