Does anyone use them? I have a friend out of state who is home bound and my sister "Skypes" him. Anyway, he's not all that well and she wants me to help her visit him online.
I want to use my notebook that doesn't have a built in camera so I have to buy one. Also, if possible we want to include other friends in this venture so that we can all visit him at the same time. I've haven't used video conferencing in years so .... what are the best free options? tips? trouble shooting?
Key word here = FREE.
thanks!

wish I could help. .don't know enough about skype or web cams. I deal with commercial type stuff, so it wouldn't even be close.
I do know there are alot of "virtual" type chat rooms, has been years since I have checked any out, that would be like a website type video chat and should be free.

Don't know if this will help or not CS but my husband and his sisters use webcamming through their gmail accounts. All three are able to talk/view each other at the same time. And yes, it's free.
Hub and one sister had built in webcams in their laptops but the other sister didn't. We had an old camera and mic we used on our pc and gave to her and it works just fine/compatible.

Thanks! I actually dread being on the camera but he's a dear friend so I'll comply. I just don't like those built in cams ... kinda creepy, IMO. We've got one but I avoid that computer.
I am trying to find the manual for my little Kodak digital camera. It seems like it has a feature. My Sony camcorder might work too. Right?

Skype is a great program. My sis-in-law speaks face to face with her daughter in Australia (for FREE) every night. I haven't tried a conference though.
Side note: I keep my webcam turned to one side when its not being used. It also has a little green light that comes on if someone's trying to access it.

I thought that the Skype would be free. We've had to use it for conferences but I've never used the video feature. I no longer have the computer that we were using at the time. Hey, maybe a Fredoland Skype party is in order! I'll bring the beer.

We've used Skype quite a bit in the past, couldn't conference though. The gmail video uses Google Talk, which I didn't like as much as Skype.
For conferencing you might try OOVOO.

Use Skype daily to chat with my friends in Convictia (Australia) The program is great but occasionally will eat systems resources so beware any background programs you may have running during your call.
