I suspect that I would be in jail for several counts of murder. You gotta draw the line somewhere.

Depends on the state and the time of day in most places as to where the line is.
If someone is in my front yard at night and I have a reasonable suspicion that they are there to do harm I can legally shoot them. Not the same case during daylight hours.
In California, you can't even shoot a home invader that is actually in your house unless they have an obvious weapon.
I draw the line (personally and within the guidelines of the law) at my property line depending on intent.

I suspect that I would be in jail for several counts of murder. You gotta draw the line somewhere. Agreed. Pulling the trigger means only one thing. To me there are certain responsibilities that go along with having a weapon, meaning any weapon, not just those in the higher powered ranges.
