tonight the jersey boy ate his first chicken fried steak with white cream gravy. you see... jersey boys are suspect of things chicken fried that do not contain chicken. and, they have never seen gravy that isn't a pretty brown color. to accompany this culinary experiment, there were mashed potatoes and stewed tomatoes. and beer, of course... rolling rocks, actually. i wish you could have seen his face when he tasted it. tiny little bite. chew-chew. raises eyebrows... hmmm... sliced a bigger bite. chew-chew-chew. smirky little smile... mmmm... then he went in for the kill, joined the clean-your-plate club and asked for 2nds.

I love chicken fried steak, but I can never get the gravy quite right. I suspect it requires a higher estrogen content to make good gravy.

i haven't made it in ages so the gravy was a little sloppy/clumpy but it still contained his three favorite componenets:
fat, sodium and cholesterol
so, he was good.

I finally got Mr. Delaware on to browned beef with gravy and mashed potatoes. AND okra.
The last time we were in Chattanooga, he and my grandmother had a scientific discussion about deep fryers. His mother has NEVER prepared anything deep fried for her family, EVER.
He didn't even know how a deep fryer worked.
I have explained to him that little girls in the South get Fry Daddy deep fryers instead of Easy Bake Ovens.

that's true!!
hey... ask him if they eat their french fries w/brown gravy in DE like they do here in MD? since it's so close, you'd think it would still be 'fries and gravy' region.
or maybe it's just a MD thing... i've never seen it anywhere but here.

In Quebec, they have dish called poutine.
French fries, cheese curd topped with brown gravy. Delicious.

South Jersey is different from your traditional Soprano's vision of Jersey. We lived outside Atlantic City for 7 years and once you get away from the city it's very rural, farmland, pine barrens, and rodeos. You get some interesting combinations: biscuits and gravy with homefries, or SCRAPPLE.

my boy is from south jersey... camden (aka east philly) but spent his summers at wildwood. his mom lives there now although she may sell soon as developers are all over wildwood like vultures on a dead animal.
scrapple looks so nasty i'd never try it to find out if it's good or not. there's enough PiG meat for CoN for the rest of her days, anyway!

Given his opposition to brown gravy in general, I'd say no, but his mom has a lot of health issues, so they've always eaten a little healthier than most.

Our next door neighbor owned Big Ernies 50's diner in Wildwood, every year he put on a Corvette car show on the boardwalk. Pretty cool to put our car up on the boards and watch the yankees stroll by. Boardwalk food can get pretty interesting too.

SOS is good food as long as somebody can make good gravy. In an ideal world, a gravy boat is a means of conveyance.
