I budget for a 5% increase each year, and get a lovely surprise in October when it's not quite that much. Be prepared.

Hey Whim, it doesn't make sense that Comcast is going up when they haven't done anything to deserve the increase. In the past 7 years, Comcast has gone up at least 30% for less channels and less knowledgable staff. I want competition and also do away with the franchise Fee aka tax upon the cut they get from sales tax. I am paying in excess of $15 sales tax per month and along with the $7 franchise tax. Go to comcastmustdie.com or comcastsucks.org if you want to get the real truth about comcast. The reason why Don Loftis got any helpas fast as he did, is because he was a former school superintendent.

A Ph.D. that says "clicker" instead of "remote control," no less.
A single consumer cannot change the tide of price increases by cable companies, so it's better to be prepared than be surprised.
Death. Taxes. Cable increases.

Actually, a group of consumers can ignite others to join in who are sick and tired of paying for less channels for higher costs. I doubt that Comcast has that high of costs except for the salaries of the executives. Also with competition prices will fall, Whim. EPB owns the telephone cables that Comcast uses.

You can look at the salaries of movie stars, television personalities, news anchors (network), etc. and see that there's probably a lot of expense involved in securing programming rights, providing channels, royalties, etc.
Prices are going to go up. It's the way the economy works. I would like competition as well, but with large-infrastructure systems such as cable television, you don't always get that choice. It sucks, but it's the truth.

Cable companies just slid by a FCC provision that would have likely required cable companies to offer channels a la carte. The FCC decided to let them off the hook because they figure competition form phone companies converting their infrastructure to offer TV service...and satellite TV will bring prices inline.
In short the cable companies are going hike all they can until market forces come into play or the FCC decides to regulate it.

Hey Whim, it seems that you don't care if cable does climb to outrageous amounts. You are just a happy little sheep waiting for comcast to slice your throat. I bet in your neck of the woods there is some competition. This increase has nothing to do with Hollywood, Whim, but the greed of Comcast. Did you check out the sites I mentioned? I bet you didn't since you you are so cheerful in giving up your cash to so-called increases which aren't needed.

Bullshit, CS. It's not a luxury at all. What about all those people who don't drive or get out much? You sound just like a sheep who is ok with the price hike and no competition in this county. It's to end this monopoly that Comcast has on Hamilton county. Did you read today's editioral, CS? Comcast ignored a section of a 1984 law that would effectively put Comcast into a price freeze. Are you happy with re-runs being shown on every channel while Comcast decided to cancel out 10+ channels earlier this year while they hiked rates up by 3%. IT's time that Hamilton County gets competition in the cable tv market. So until then Comcast will force their monopoly down our throats even further.

What I'm saying is that if it upset me the way that you seem to be upset, that I would get rid of it. It is not really the only option for any of us. There are books to read, books on tape, special reading programs for visually impaired, broadcast TV & radio as optons to keep people entertained. Satellite options are there as well. If enough people who are angry about it just end the service they will get the message. Not until ...

Also, I have a relative who owns a cable company in another part of Tennessee & he is wealthier than any of us could ever dream to be. He was a guest on talk radio a while back and in the reality of his explanation, Comcast isn't a monopoly. Other companies could compete, but the start up costs and managing costs are not attainable.
Another relative works in communications and tells me that different companies own poles that are side by side and the average consumer isn't really aware of the depth of how the systems actually work. It is more than just owning the pole itself, it is everything that is serviced by that particular pole.
Mind you, this is all dinner conversation so I only repeat what I hear.

Sitting around on ones ass watching the noisy box is a luxury. Don't want to pay the price? Turn the stupid thing off. People watch too much TV anyway.

It is a luxury, just as a computer. But both make valuable tools to our world today. TV's are abused just as the INTERNET. But everyone needs a form of escape. Some read, some ex cerise, some walk . I will complain about the rate, but I will still keep my cable and my INTERNET!

Insight Cable is the provider and guess what! Comcast just purchased the Insight franchises for Greater Lafayette and Monticello, Indiana. Starting January 1, we're in Comcast country and no request for increased fees as of yet ... I didn't check out your sites because it's tough for me to take something that sounds like "omglikecomcastislikesucky.com" Yeah. If they want to get a point across to me, they'll have to be a little more professional about it.

I didn't grow up with cable and my parents STILL don't have it in their home. I know my grandmother would like to watch Food Network and HGTV and Grandpa would like to see Speed and CMT, but you know what ... it's not in their budget. It's not a necessity and they get by with 3, 9, 12, 61 and Netflix.

All I can say is I look forward to some REAL competition. I've seen personally what happens when your local newspaper has no advertising competition. Bastards!

Every time cable rates increase in Chattanooga, their silent partner, the City, gets a raise for doing absolutely nothing ....

Thank you, Coffee, and I thought the City partnered with the cable people -- can you put up a link re that, Wildman?

Actually it was the county that partnered up with Comcast. Thus everyone in the county must pay the franchise fee or tax. Koradx if it was just the city then the city residence would only be paying it.
