... Now, climb back under your rock CoN. ... Well, thank you. I will check these stories out tonight when I have more time to read through them. And, again, it's really not necessary to be such an ASS.

My question to all the people now on the band wagon is why now? Why not the same fervor for Habitat for Humanity?

I believe they alleviate some of the "tax" issue with big lawyer words which, in layman terms, we just upgraded your house . I know the years this first began, people were getting zapped with taxes, but, extreme did there best to fix it. From ALL of those above articles that Gus listed, NOT ONE, can be attributed to the new house or the show. Every damn one of them goes to violations, ie, the first one. She had city code violations like junk cars on her property and ignored the city telling her to clean up. Well, she got fined and can't pay the fine. That's not the shows fault. That just shows you sometimes you can get out of the ghetto, but the ghetto doesn't get out of you! Not one of the above can use the new house as an excuse. The one whose taxes and utilities went up. Well hell, the mortgage was paid off for them, guess they should had used that money to cover the extra expenses instead of taking out another mortgage. I really don't think anyone can blame this show. The mortgage pay offs come from donations. The show doesn't ever promise to pay off mortgages or bills. Donations are generous enough to do so, IF they get them. I have also yet to find ANY article pointing to the "shoddy" construction. Anything I have found has been comments from the back of the bus, ie, comments from people who are just commenting on articles. I would imagine a house that takes six months to build with a crew of 6 could be built as strong, as well , in a week with a crew of 3,700 ! So, Raph, no existence of shoddiness and the taxes aren't the problem. Racking up hundreds of thousands of dollars for mortgaging that new house, violations of city codes caused by you, after the fact. Also job loss, which would mean you would lose your old house anyway.

My question to all the people now on the band wagon is why now? Why not the same fervor for Habitat for Humanity? Because habitat doesn't put on a big show. If they would pressure and ask more, they could get that on a smaller scale. Also, they don't build as quickly so you wouldn't need that many people. Until Extreme Home came to town I had heard NOTHING about Habitat needing volunteers, had you?

He makes my panties all wet." ;D

My husband and I have both worked on several Habitat Houses. Normally, large groups/businesses/agencies get together and volunteer to work on a house. If you guys are interested, just call them. I'm sure they'll put you to work.

Now that I have had a chance to peruse elGus's links, I can say three things: 1. Some of your links are redundant, telling a couple of the same family's stories more than once. 2. Most of the stories are about possible foreclosures but I cannot find any story anywhere that confirms that an actual foreclosure was completed. And, 3. There was not one story of any family that "destroyed" their EMHE home.
While I found that most of the foreclosures were related to business ventures gone bad, there was at least one that was a subprime ARM that skyrocketed and many were also affected by huge increases in property taxes and utilities. Additionally, one of elGus's links that talks about these "game shows" states that the show's producers actually encourage these families to take out home equity loans in order to keep up with property taxes. Not sure if that's really true but it doesn't sound like very good advice.
Thanks again, elGus, for putting up your sources.

There is a local group collecting donations to pay off the family's mortgage. It was stated that if not enough donations were collected to pay off the mortgage the network would pony up the remainder. I think I am the only person in Chatt that has not paid any attention to this. From what I think I heard when this was first starting was the home has been in their family for 50 years? Maybe I am remembering that wrong. But if that is the case, why do they have a $200k mortgage on a home that has been in their family for 50 years? Like I said, I may not be remembering that correctly. Just curious.

People take new mortgages out for a myriad of reasons: to finance a business venture, to pay for kid's college, to pay for major things that break and need replacing, to pay off medical bills and some for sheer stupidity. It would be interesting to get some backstory on this one wouldn't it?

I may not be remembering it correctly, so it may not be the case. I am just not sure.

I may not be remembering it correctly, so it may not be the case. I am just not sure. The paper said they bought the house in 01 for $60k and $50k would be covered by donations.

I don't understand why a primetime, nationwide TV show can make millions of dollars and then actually ask for community donations to pay off a mortgage. Yeah, they foot the bill to build, but they have thousands of volunteer man hours (free labor), many of the items/materials get donated (free), and many of their purchases come from their partners (discounts).
If a cast member from large shows like Friends and 2 1/2 men can make a million per episode, I hardly think ABS should be asking for donations from a community to pay off a house that ABC chose to build.
If that makes me insensitive, I'm sorry....I just don't get that. A $50-60K mortgage...even a $100K mortgage is chump change to ABC and they are making millions broadcasting these shows. The donations would be more effective if given to a local organization. Just my opinon.

The network did say they would pay off whatever the donations didn't cover on the mortgage. I like that the community got involved to the extent that it did.
Now on to the insensitivity aspect: After seeing this on the TV news and in the newspaper for a week, I am EXTREMELY tired of being bombarded with this story. Yes, this is an awesome thing to happen for this family and that cute kid. I feel for them and their plight. But, has unemployment been solved? Has world peace been achieved? Are there no hungry children in the world? No despair? No sickness or disease?

I have been over it since it began.
I was talking to some people today that were at the site, and basically the main guy would just go out to film parts, and then stay in the trailer the rest of the day not doing any of the actual build. Color me surprised.
