For this........ "What do they want? I don't think suburban students have been treated fairly," Thurman said. "Poor people learn. Slaves learned to read. I don't know why poor people can't learn to read and write. I have a lot of poor people in my family, but they are still expected to learn."Yeah that's just so racist! Good god I'm so sick of the race card bullshit!

Sounds like much ado about nothing to me. Thurman is a doer and that scares the pants off of people. I admittedly haven't followed it closely but plan to read her statements when I have time to devote to the issue. I've heard her radio statements though. I like her attitude.

I hate it whenever anyone trows the race card. I also hate it when our elected officials are constantly complaining and griping about how bad the other side is and offer no solutions. Just the same old tired party talking points. Ms. Favors isn't on the school board, and until she is, she needs to concentrate on the job she was elected to do. Namely represent her constituents at the state level. Ms Thurman, I don't know where to begin. I don't believe I have ever seen a picture of her smiling. She is always complaining about something with no realistic solutions. She and her fellow board members asked the previous superintendent to cut costs/jobs from the central office, and lo and behold, the biggest job on the list to cut was her crony, Rick Smith. Yep the good-ol-boy system is alive and well. They even had to go as far as to change the rules to get their buddy installed as the new superintendent. Rhonda might want a refresher course on American history. Slaves weren't offered the opportunity to learn to read. And if they were caught, they were beaten and sometimes killed.

She didn't say all slaves learned to read. I think the point she was trying to make is that all this money has been thrown at the situation with little or no results. As far as the "good ole boy " system well unfortunately that's just a fact of life in small town politics and no I abhor it just like anyone else.

What she said, and what the conmprehension-impaired rep claimed she said are 2 different things. That person apparently does not understand the english language or has no reading comprehension. She took it totally out of context. I am leaning towards the fact that she really has no clue.

When you say "they learned to read", surely you are not suggesting that all of "they" learned to read. It was a crime to teach slaves to read. I would estimate that only a VERY small percentage of "they" were taught/learned to read. It is nearly impossible for a person to teach themselves to read without any outside help. Try picking up a book written in Chinese and see if you could learn to read it without any outside references. I might even suggest that the average white person during the slavery years couldn't read.

Many of them ( I'm sure how many exactly could be debated until the cows come home ) learned by themselves or taught each other.............. pathways.thinkport.org/about/about4f.cfm

Here is the quote as I found it: 'I don't think suburban students have been treated fairly,' she said in the story. 'Poor people learn. Slaves learned to read. I don't know why poor people can't learn to read and write. I have a lot of poor people in my family, but they are still expected to learn.'Nowhere do I read that she said every single slave learned to read. The way I take it, is that some slaves, with all of that against them, learned to read. I see that is a positive thing, the human spirit, against all of those obstacles, some of them learned to read. While, in the current day, some kids are given education and throw it away. And here is a personal anecdote about your saying that it is nearly impossible for somebody to learn to read without help. My mom is German, she married my dad when he was stationed in Germany and moved here when he was stationed here. She did not speak English, moved here, read newspapers, magazines and books, learned to read and speak English incredibly well.

I delivered a dozen roses to Rhonda today. The card read: Do us a FAVOR and don't leave there.I saw her smile and actually laugh. Favor does not realize she is messing with Soddy Daisy folks. Some here are still a little backward.

It has to do with wanting to learn. Rich or poor, there has to be motivation. JMHO. After reading her statements I think Thurman showed a fair amount of ignorance herself. If she can't figure out why certain poor students in our system aren't learning then she needs to take a long slow ride through some poor neighborhoods. If she still can't figure it out then she needs to pull the car over and get out. Then she'll know.
