I was minus the proper weapon…
Let me explain.
In the house we have: 1-M1A Sniper Rifle 1-M1 Garand 1-AK-74 (Not 47 this is not a typo) 1-Mini-14 2-Bushmaster M-4 Commandos 1-Mossberg 590 assault shotgun 1-Remmington 870 Police Shottie 2-9mm pistols 2-45 Cal. 1911's 1-BB gun…
Trust me, the BB gun is important to this story.
So last night my dogs found and decided to 'play' with a field mouse in the backyard, this did a LOOOT of damage to the mouse and it was dying a slow painful death by the time I got there. The only humane thing to do was to put the little guy out of his misery.
As an aside here… I HATE the concept of killing any living animal, I find it a bit distasteful and unfair to the animal, this obviously being an exception to the rule of course.
Anywho…
I figured I would put the little guy down with the BB gun… well… that would have been pretty stupid, BB might not penetrate the skin, might cause more pain …etc…
So I went to the safe, opened it up and realized that EVERY SINGLE WEAPON I have would do three things really well.
1: It would kill the mouse. 2: It would likely blow the damn thing into a half million parts. 3: The second I opened up with one of these loud weapons, I'd likely be in jail right now…
So me… The guy with all the aforementioned firearms, buttloads of ammo… who actually has a Zombie attack disaster preparedness plan and a BB gun…
Had to borrow my neighbors 22 rifle…
I don't think I have been this ashamed in my life… until of course it became utterly humorous that with all this firepower… I didn't have the right weapon for the job…
I'm getting a 22 this week…

My little hand pump BB gun would have been sufficient with those "deadly rounds" ;D spear shaped bullets. I've killed a few squirrels and even a possum with it. Just pump it up 10 times and aim for the head.

Did the neighbor appreciate the humor?

How awful. When we are that situation we use a big rock or cement block or a shovel. Sounds horrible but it is quick. I know a guy who also uses blow guns with a variety of dart sizes.

The neighbor was laughing his ass off…
And I agree CS, it really sucked… I mean IT REALLY SUCKED!
It got a clean and quick death though, so… maybe Karma will be kind to me on this one.

Sgt, get a ruger 10/22 rifle. It's the best 22 out there that I know of. As for the BB gun go with a .177 caliber pellet gun. Heck, I have knocked the crap out of squirrels from around 40 yards. Go with a Winchester brand Sgt for the pellet rifle.
Raph, your pellet gun is no match for a Winchester 1000. I had one of the 10 pump pellet guns and it's a decent gun that shoots around 700fps. Hell, I have killed a few possums with a baseball bat that I trapped.

When I'm forced to do in small critters, I go for the shovel. I really don't care for the whole procedure, but when you have cats it's part of the deal.

Like Coffeeshooter said...a big rock or something of that nature would do the job fast and painlessly...

Yeah my outdoor cat has managed to drag up two baby rabbits in the last couple of weeks. The first one he mangled partially and my wife and daughter actually took it to the zoo. The second one happened a couple of days ago. I was sitting at the computer in the evening and kept hearing this loud what I would call eeking sound so I went out to see what was going on and my male cat was batting around and munching on something. I went back in the house to get a flashlight to help me see what he had. He saw me coming with the light and I could see that he had mangled this one as well. I must have spooked him or he knew I was going to take his meal away from him so he started running towards the woods. I got close to him but he ran off into the woods. I'm hoping the poor rabbit might have had a better chance to escape him in the woods but I have my serious doubts.

I dunno…
I think between the prospect of being crushed by a rock or beaten with a shovel I'd still prefer a bullet behind the ear.
Just seams faster and less… horror-flick-ish.

Didn't feel like touching it, but the thought did cross my mind… All the same… a shot behind the ear is still faster and less painful. A far better fate than those you and Crash shove up each others…. Uhhh…. never mind.

Our dog treed a possum and would not leave it alone. The tree was very close to the fence at the back of our yard. My husband decided to use the shovel to knock the possum out of the tree and over the fence into the neighbor's yard, so the little critter could get away. Did you know that a possum can turn loose of a tree and grab onto a shovel?

This may need a fork.

I was picturing in my head, opossum grabs the shovel, and now you are swinging it back and forth over your head to make it let go. Or you whomp it on the ground, opossum end first, or just bang it on the fence till the lil bastard lets go in the other persons yard..............yep, there has to be more!

Yes, the possum was hanging onto the shovel and my husband was trying to fling it off over the fence. Let me say first that recently had a skunk in the yard, and we borrowed a trap from the exterminator, caught it, and took it to the woods to release it. We don't make a habit of killing furry critters. But the possum hanging onto the shovel was more than we were willing to handle. He killed it.

I'm properly armed for the mouse invasion now...
Got a Winchester 22 rifle.

You should see what a possum does when cornered in your basement with you jabbing at it with the end of a broom. Knarly little creatures! ;D I did manage to shue him out.

Sgt, the only drawback to a winchester is that it's tube feed.

Sgt, the only drawback to a winchester is that it's tube feed. I've never owned the Winchester, but I never had any problems with the marlin tube fed .22s. They're a little slow to reload, but I wouldn't plan on taking any pillboxes with a .22 anyway.
