Dried beef and gravy on toast. Sh!t on the Shingle. ;D Is dried beef the same as "chip beef"? If so, my mom used to make that when I was little (at least that's what she called it). I loved it! Glad you responded b/c after I posted I thought it might have been "same old sh!t". Thanks Nana! you are correct... chipped dried beef.

My dogs love it too.

Creamed chip beef is great on biscuts. I buy the frozen stouffer's. Yum! Although, I've never tried it on toast. That will be next.
SOS is not ground beef gravy on mashed potatoes? Perhaps, I'm thinking of sheppard's pie. I'm getting hungry just thinking about all this.

some families call the hamburger gravy SOS but technically it's not. and... sheppard's pie is a totally different dish.

Thought I would resurrect this thread since the weather has changed. I made spicy hot homemade chili tonight. Anybody else made any cold weather foods yet? I'm needing some ideas.

i made a beef stew for the first time on top the stove... usually i make it in the crock pot but i was home today so i gave it a go. it turned out really good... baby carrots, tiny potatoes, mushrooms and pearl onions. and some crusty italian garlic bread to go with. jersey boy was fat and happy. the only carrots this man ever eats are in the dinty moore stew (bleech!!) so i had to make him eat the first couple but he liked these carrots and was't joking since he took them in his seconds.
he's picky about his veggies and that's a major pain in the ass for me cooking.

I am going to try a modified version of this tonight! I am going to use canned beans in mine ;D
White Chili
Ingredients 1 lb large white beans, soaked overnight in water, drained 6 cups chicken broth 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 medium onions, chopped (divided) 1 Tbsp olive oil 2 4-ounce cans chopped green chilies 2 tsp ground cumin 1 1/2 tsp dried oregano 1/4 tsp ground cloves 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper 4 cups diced cooked chicken 3 cups grated Monterey Jack cheese 1 jalapeno or serrano pepper, chopped
1 Combine beans, chicken broth, garlic and half the onions in a large soup pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until beans are very soft, 3 hours or more. Add additional water (or watered-down broth), if necessary.
2 In a skillet, sauté remaining onions in oil until tender. Add chilies and seasonings and mix thoroughly. Add to bean mixture. Add chicken and continue to simmer 1 hour. Check seasoning, add jalapeno or serrano to level of desired hotness.
3 Serve topped with grated cheese. Garnish with cilantro, chopped fresh tomato, salsa, chopped scallions, and/or guacamole. Serve with fresh warmed flour tortillas or tortilla chips.
8-10 servings

Thought I would resurrect this thread since the weather has changed. I made spicy hot homemade chili tonight. Anybody else made any cold weather foods yet? I'm needing some ideas. I love cold weather cooking! I have a "stress soup" that I make. Like veggie soup but i add hamburger to the mix. Quartered potatos ( I like big hunks) Frozen peas Frozen green beans Frozen shelly peas (if you like em) Canned mixed veggies, 2 large cans. Frozen carrots (if you want em) or Fresh 2 cans of diced tomatoes Chopped onions ( leave them large chunks) About a pound and a half of cooked, crumbled hamburger ( be sure to rinse your cooked meat and get the fat off, I do this everytime for every recipe) Put it all into a large pot. Shouldn't have to add water since you add the juice from the canned items. May have to add a little water as it cooks. Cook on med to high for about 30 minutes or until potatos are tender. Serve with your fav cornbread recipe. I do both cornbread and jalapeno cornbread. YUMMMY stuff

I have to skip the slaw... I wound up changing my mind anyway. Tonight it's grilled chicken on a bead of whole wheat rotini and tomato alfredo
